At the NATO summit held in Turkey in July, the course was set for the ‘Europeanisation’ of the military alliance – a so-called ‘new’ NATO. All member states are currently undergoing a period of historic military build-up. Yet it is precisely here that competition and fault lines within the alliance are becoming very apparent. The rise of right-wing and fascist parties, too, is fuelled by this supposed contradiction between unity and the antagonism between the countries.
Where, specifically, does the pursuit of military and economic autonomy by the leading European countries come into conflict? To what extent are right-wing and fascist forces from Europe and North America acting in concert? Are figures such as Meloni in Italy or the AfD in Germany the political forces that embody this new quality of unity and autonomy within the transatlantic alliance?
We will be discussing these and other questions with the journalist and author Jörg Kronauer, whose new book on the ‘transatlantic right’ has just been published. (https://shop.papyrossa.de/Kronauer-Joerg-Die-Brandleger). Together with activists from Germany and Italy, amongst others, we also intend to discuss the concrete political implications of the rise of the right and fascists.
